The unexpected can happen quickly when in the mountains or on the rock. This course is designed to give you the skills to handle an emergency, and be an overall better climbing partner. We will dive into the skills needed to rescue an injured climber whether they are following the pitch of climbing or leading it.

The unexpected can happen quickly when in the mountains or on the rock. This course is designed to give you the skills to handle an emergency, and be an overall better climbing partner. We will dive into the skills needed to rescue an injured climber whether they are following the pitch of climbing or leading it.

This course dives much deeper than you just lower them to the ground. It is designed to give you a toolset that you can take into many other rescue applications in the mountains. The fundamentals learned in this course are the same fundamentals used in things such as crevasse rescue.

Course Objectives

  • Rescue Knots and Hitches

  • Anchor Management for rescues

  • Protecting yourself as the rescuer 

  • Ascending and descending a rope with an injured partner

  • Lowering tactics and when it is appropriate

  • Hauling systems

  • Passing a knot from a damaged rope

Itinerary

  • Meet at climbing destination at 8:30 

  • Begin with learning rescue knots and hitches

  • Refresh on proper gear placement

  • Talk through rescue situations and dissect what the best course of action is.

  • Spend the day working through those common and uncommon scenarios.

  • Your guide will have real world experience and will assist you every step of the way.

Prerequisites

  • Some indoor or outdoor rock climbing experience required.

  • Understanding of how to place traditional rock protection.
