Introduction to Mountaineering
Are you ready to begin your climbing journey and explore peaks around the world? This course will give you the skillset to feel confident as you move through the mountains. You will learn snow and rock climbing skills, backcountry camping and cooking, navigation, anchor building, and much more!
Our three-day intro to mountaineering course teaches basic skills essential for mountaineering. Participants will spend 2 nights and 3 days learning and practicing mountaineering techniques. This all encompassing course will cover everything from rock and snow climbing techniques to backcountry camping, cooking, navigation and much more.
The training takes place on the beautiful University Peak (13,595 ft). University peak is located outside of Independence, CA. We start in Independence doing a thorough gear check to make sure you are well prepared for our objective. Then we head into our basecamp working on various skills along the way. After arriving at the basecamp we will build camp and work on the skills necessary to climb University Peak. Before bed we will enjoy a tasty dinner your guides will prepare for you. The following day we will attempt an ascent of the North Face of University Peak. The last day we focus on Navigation, knots, and Anchor building to set you up for your own personal objectives in the Eastern Sierra and Beyond.
This program is ideal for novice climbers seeking to learn the fundamentals of mountaineering and gain confidence traveling in the mountains. No matter what you encounter, rock scrambling, steep snow slopes, whiteouts, this course is built to give you the skills to handle it.

Course Objectives
Day 1: Meet in Independence, CA for a gear check and head into basecamp located at the base of University Peak at a beautiful lake. In the afternoon you will do an in depth session learning snow and rock climbing skills.
Day 2: Summit day! Get an early start and attempt to summit University Peak via the North Face.
Day 3: Wake up and enjoy breakfast. Today we learn navigation skills, knots, and an introduction to snow and rock climbing anchors. Hike back to the trailhead
