Big Wall Climbing Course

Our big wall course is for anyone who dreams to one day look down on Yosemite Valley from El Capitan, Half Dome, or Washington Column. This in-depth course covers everything one needs to know in order to climb the entry level walls to the large muti-day objectives. This course is meant for those who already have an understanding of traditional multipitch climbing. Our guides are all certified by the AMGA with extensive wall climbing experience.

  • Big wall climbing equipment

  • Hauling techniques

  • Wall climbing strategies

  • Ascending ropes

  • Constructing and deconstructing a portaledge

  • Basic aid climbing techniques

  • Specific aid climbing equipment (hooks, rivet hangers, pitons.)

  • Cleaning an aid pitch

  • Lower outs

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Meet at the parking lot of a local crag at 8:30am

  • Overview of big wall gear

  • Aid climbing practice

  • Ascending practice

  • Cleaning an aid pitch

Day 2

  • Hauling

  • Docking a haul bag

  • Lower outs

  • Constructing a portaledge

Prerequisites

  • Experience traditional climbing

  • Confidence placing traditional rock protection
